Dates: First practice for both leagues is at 6 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 4, at the Mill Avenue Park skating rinks.

Days: Coaches determine practice schedule, usually at 6 p.m. once or twice per week. Games are usually played Saturday mornings at Mill Avenue Park, Baxter or Nisswa depending on schedule. Some games will be played in the evenings during normally scheduled practice times.

 

Time: Polar Bears (ages 11-15) play at 10 a.m., Penguins (ages 7-10) play at 11 a.m. on Saturdays

Cost: $35 per player for Penguins and Polar Bears.

$100 per team for Sea Lions.

Registration Form

The purpose of the pond hockey leagues is to give participants an opportunity to improve skating skills, learn the game of hockey and have fun. Scores and standing will not be kept. Teams are co-ed.

Penguins & Polar Bears:

Equipment (helmet, elbow pads, shin pads, jerseys) will be provided to the first 48 players who register. Goaltender equipment is provided (including sticks). Participants must provide their own sticks, skates and mouthguards.

 

Sea Lions:

Must provide all equipment, including pucks.

PENGUINS/POLAR BEARS  Rules

  1. No checking allowed (2-minute penalty).
  2. Offside will be called (will be lax for Penguins).
  3. No slap shots (2-minute penalty); second offense is disqualification for remainder of game.
  4. Puck must stay on the ice, but a player may softly flip a puck.
  5. No icing.
  6. No excessive force (5-minute penalty). Second offense is disqualification from remainder of game.
  7. Games will consist of two 25-minute halves of running time.
  8. No swearing (2-minute penalty). Second offense is disqualification for remainder of game.
  9. Typical minor penalties: Unintentional slashing, tripping, hooking, holding, etc. (2-minute penalty).
  10. Typical major penalties: Intentional slashing, punching, roughing, etc. (5-minute penalty).

Sea Lions Rules

  1. Each team must have an adult "supervisor" who shall be on the bench for each game.
  2. Rosters must be turned in to the Brainerd Parks and Recreation Department, and team registration payment must be made, prior to first game.
  3. All players must wear helmets, mouth guards and hockey skates. Other protective equipment is optional but highly recommended.
  4. Games will consist of two 20-minute halves of running time with a 5-minute intermission. Players will change “on the fly.”
  5. There will be four players on the ice for each team. Teams may consist of a maximum of eight (8) players.
  6. Teams must have matching jerseys.
  7. The team, which started the game on defense, will have possession of the puck to start the second half. Teams will also switch goals at halftime.
  8. Penalties will be called for rule infractions.
  9. A minor penalty will result in stoppage of play and a goal and possession of the puck awarded to the opposing team. Minor penalties include tripping, slashing, elbowing, etc.
  10. Any major penalty, which includes any action that could possibly injure another player, will result in the ejection of the offending player. The team that received the player ejection will play the remainder of the game short-handed.
  11. Any fighting will result in the game being called and disqualification of both teams.
  12. Players ejected or teams disqualified may not resume play until after meeting with the Brainerd Parks and Recreation Department’s Sportsmanship Committee and cleared to resume play by the Park Board.
  13. No checking is allowed. Such action will result in a major penalty.
  14. No slap shots allowed. Such action will result in a minor penalty. Sticks must remain on the ice during play. Players are not allowed to lift pucks more than 12” off the ice. Such action will result in the other team gaining possession of the puck.
  15. Contacting the puck above the waist will result in loss of possession.
  16. There are no off-sides or icing calls.
  17. Goals must be scored from the attacking side of center ice, inside the blue line.
  18. Goaltending is not allowed. However, a player may be positioned in the area of the goal, but players cannot lay their sticks or body down to protect the goal area. Such action will result in a minor penalty. No goalie equipment or goalie sticks are permitted.
  19. Teams must give their opponents ˝ ice after a goal is scored or an infraction takes place. The defense must allow offense to cross center ice following a goal or infraction before initiating play. The puck must cross center ice ahead of any offensive players.
  20. If a puck leaves the rink, the last team to touch it loses possession. During restart, the defender must give his opponent 2-stick lengths of space from the point where the puck left the rink.
  21. Players can play on only one team.
